We are very sad to report the death of Stephen Hall, former General Manager and Artistic Director of the Australian Opera, as it was then known.

Hall played a pivotal role in the development of the company, before leaving to found the Sydney Festival, which he led for 18 years. He died at home on Christmas Eve, aged 78.

He will be remembered for his immense contribution to Australian cultural life, his flair as a director, his quick sense of humour and his frank, ever-ready opinions.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian have both published obituaries.
