Neil Armfield on his vision for the Melbourne Ring Cycle

Neil Armfield has a huge responsibility on his shoulders, directing Opera Australia’s first even production of Wagner’s almighty Ring Cycle. Far from shying away from the pressure, Armfield is bold in ambition and quietly confident:

“I want to produce the best – by which I mean the deepest and richest – communication of the work that has ever been realised on the stage.”

Armfield is quick to dismiss the technological wizardry that often characterises productions of the Ring, and stresses the basic humanity of the epic story based in Norse mythology.
